Winning the Winter Break

Winning the Winter Break
There are a lot of pity parties going on at this point in the season. Wrestlers complaining about how hard practice is, making weight, ...bad matches, traveling, and on and on. Too much negativity.
The wrestlers who get the most out of themselves during the break are good at reminding themselves what they love about wrestling (other than winning). They are grateful for the opportunity to train, compete and live the lifestyle of a champion.
Be the 1 in 10 wrestler who focuses on what they love about the sport and the process of improvement. Many wrestlers, even very good ones, will focus on the negatives, make excuses and complain. Rest assure this won't help. Be the wrestler who finds the love in all aspects of wrestling (the training, the grind, the competition, etc.).
When I wrestled at Penn, our coach Zeke Jones sent us an email. He encouraged us to remember that feeling we got when we first fell in love with the sport. Think about that for a minute.

WHY WRESTLE
Updated on 06/10/2022
“Why Wrestle?”
Wrestling prepares a boy or girl to fight the game of life!
The wrestler is the one athlete who must meet his or her opponent and do battle completely alone; no one can substitute;
no time outs; no water breaks.
He or she has no one to check, block, screen, or assist
him or her in any way. There is no one else to blame for mistakes made.
When he or she wins, they must show quiet pride and modesty; when he or she loses, the responsibility is theirs.
Wrestling is a tough sport!
In other sports, when contact is made the whistle is blown.
In wrestling, when contact is made, we’re just getting started.
No other sport requires more sacrifice than wrestling.
The individual, who wrestles, offers more of his or her character than can ever be explained.
It is something that he or she will carry through every test, trial, and tribulation!

WRESTLING INFO SHEET
FOR
INCOMING FRESHMEN/NEW WRESTLERS
Wrestling is a winter sport. Our first practice is November 14, 2016 at 3:45 -6 pm at Capital High School. We practice almost every day except match days and/or tournament weekends. We practice through Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks with a little time to visit family. Real wrestlers take their time off before and after the high school season. We have open mat from October 4TH – November 10th on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm. This is a great time to come by and introduce yourself to your coaches and teammates! We have weight certification starting October 15th – November 29th. THIS WILL BE EXPLAINED MORE LATER BUT YOU CAN ALSO TALK TO OUR OLDER WRESTLERS/COACHES. We would like to see everyone doing one certification early and another certification (if needed) after we are practicing.
If you are interested in trying out for the team this upcoming season, these are some things that you should be doing:
- Go to some open mat workouts
- Get stronger
- Eat healthy
- Keep your grades up
- Get your paperwork done online (flyer available)

Wrestling Mindset-Who Cares How You Feel?
Updated on 06/10/2022
Who cares how you feel?
If you want to be great, you can't put too much emphasis on the way you feel. Sometimes you feel like practicing, sometimes you don't. S...ometimes you feel like lifting, sometimes you don't. Maybe you never feel like running or doing conditioning. It is irrelevant if you want to be great.
To be a champion you need to act differently then you feel on a regular basis. Don't feel like practicing? Do it anyway! It is totally in your control.
The greats have learned to act differently then they feel. This goes for life too. Don't feel like studying? Do it anyway. Don't feel like going to church this weekend? Do it anyway! Don't feel like being nice to your sister? Do it anyway!
When you have goals and values, you need to act consistently in a way that will get you closer to those goals and reaffirm those values.
Don't feel like it? Do it anyway!
